Transfer Credits
Transfer credits are granted from a higher education institution and/or a technical vocational institution. Many adults have one or more credits from courses, and those credits can be applied towards degrees.
Prior Learning Credits
Prior learning credits allow one’s previous learning in a variety of formats to count toward a degree.
TCCA awards credits for that learning, even if it took place outside of a college classroom.
Education comes in many forms and does not always occur in a classroom. That great project you had with your company, the experience of managing a team, the craft business you run on the side, and the kids whose schedules you oversee have helped you learn, grow, and organize/manage/lead. We honor prior learning because it is everything you have mastered and yet, it has not been recognized as degree credits. We do!
We also know that a degree is proof of the knowledge you already have — whether it was years spent commanding soldiers, running a business, teaching in a church, you now seek a formal degree recognizing your life’s work. We want to acknowledge the work you have done. Some avenues that you may have gained prior learning include:
- Advanced Placement (AP) exams
- CLEP courses; Praxis Exam scores
- Military service and training courses; leadership courses; military schools
- Career experience, career certifications, and training courses
- Online coursework in any subject area
- Volunteer work
- Other standardized tests include the BASI test.
- Reading and self-education
- Published works of any type (books, monographs, White papers, lesson planning, business proposals, chapters in books, etc.)
- Life experiences, such as caring for children or an aging relative.
- Service in your community (election staff, voter registration, census surveys, environmental awareness, political campaigns, organizing community fellowships)
- Service to the community as an elected official, or appointed by local government to a position (city/county library committee; environmental councils; water conservationist)
- Managing a team at a job or career management
- Volunteer experience, especially over the long term.
- Previous college work or classwork from an unaccredited school
- Travel, reading, and self-education.
Documents that record your achievements can also help demonstrate your prior learning. For example, this may include:
- Certificates of professional credentials
- Awards from your business, career, community; details about workplace certifications; training classes
- Military record (DD 214)
These documents are all included in your CV…the curriculum vitae…the story of your life since graduating high school…your belief in God…your involvement in spirituality…your participation in the community, your church, your clubs, your nation. It can include everything you have published, every speech you have given, and everything that shows your background.
